On Tuesday, June 25, the Cabinet of Ministers approved 70 persons to be granted Latvian citizenship after they completed the naturalization process. The number includes one minor whose parents have naturalized.
Of 69 applicants, 62% are ethnic Russians, 10% are Ukrainians, 15% are Belarusians, while Lithuanians, Poles and other nationalities are also represented.
In the next few days, the new citizens will receive a letter from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP), which will contain confirmation of their admission to citizenship, as well as provide important information on acquiring a new Latvian passport.
In total 146,762 persons have been admitted to Latvian citizenship through naturalization since 1995, including 402 persons so far this year.
In order to become a citizen of Latvia under the naturalization procedure, a person must demonstrate basic proficiency in the Latvian language and pass tests on Latvian history and the constitution and know the national anthem.
